In 2020, during the shooting of Shamshera, Sanjay Dutt was diagnosed with lung cancer. Recently, he spoke about the disease and how he faced it. He said that he prefers to choose death over treatment. However, he latterly recovered and proceeded work.

Sanjay Dutt attracted lung cancer when rephotographing for Shamshera starring Ranbir Kapoor. He continued to work despite all this and even shot many action scenes in KGF 2 during treatment. Dutt said that he wasn't duly informed about the cancer news as he didn't have any family members by his side. He also told that his family has a history of cancer.

The actor participated the struggles and challenges he passed during the treatment. Sanjay first developed back pain and was treated with a hot water bottle and painkillers until the day he experienced difficulty breathing. latterly he was aimlessly informed that he has cancer and no bone
from his family was around.
Looking back on his family history of death due to cancer, Sanjay preferred to die. His woman
was in Dubai so his family was by his side and he told her if the result would be death also he rather wishes to die than take treatment. "I don't want chemotherapy. However, I will just die but I don't want any treatment, if I have to die."
Sanjay Dutt was last seen in Shamshera and KGF 2. Next, he will play an antagonist in Lokesh Kangaraj's Thalapathy 67. He will also be seen in Baap alongside Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, and Sunny Deol.
